Find two numbers whose difference is 42 and product is -405

Set up 2 equations and 2 unknowns.

x - y = 42

xy = -405

Then rearrange the second so y = -405/x, and substitute this value of y into the first equation. Can you take it from here?

x = 27

y = 15
