Homework Help: Grammar

Posted by Tiffany on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 5:36pm.

I was wondering if you can help me with my worksheet on punctuation and mechanics.
2. Herodutus was a cross eyed door to door salesman who sold out of date grammar books that emphasized the importance of hyphens.
3. The old ship Lollipop like other ships and aircraft, as well as spacecraft, movies, plays, musical scores, books and magazines are italicized not underlined. Furthermore, don't forget to italicize letters and foreign words like a or je ne sais quoi, though never italicise holy books like the Koran or the Bible.
4. When if comes to punctuation, there is always room for improvement, moreover in your case, that's alll the room there is.
5. Here is a blessing of which I am fully aware, a lover with wild young hormones and a penchant for colons and commas.
6. This is the way to her heart, take a left many times and then look back for colons.
7. Haven't you had enough time studying quotation marks cried the professor grinding his teeth and stamping his feet.
8. Put quotation marks around short poem like Ithaca, on the other hand underline book length poems like Dante's The Divine Comedy.
9. 37 dots across the page may work for Edith Wharton, however ellipses generally c come in 3's, although an ellipsis at the end of a sentence is followed by a 4th dot, the period.
10. Before three am on Jan. 15th, 2003, Dan finished reading all about Mechanics in The Concise Wadsworth Handbook.

My attempt:
2. Herodotus was a cross-eyed-door-to-door salesman who sold out of date grammar books that emphasized the importance of hyphens.
3. The old ship Lollipop [italized] like other ships and aircraft, as well as spacecraft, movies, plays, musical scores, books and magazines are italicized not underlined. Furthermore, don't forget to italicize letters and foreign words like a [italizied] or je ne sais quoi [italicized], though never italicise holy books like the Koran or the Bible.
4. not sure.
5. not sure.
6. This is the way to her heart: take a left many times and then look bac for colons.
7. "Haven't you had enough time studying quotation marks," cried the professor grinding his teeth and stamping his feet.
8. Put quotation marks around short poems like "Ithaca," on the other hand underline book length poems like Dante's The Divine Comedy [underline].
9. Thirty-seven dots across the page may work for Edith Wharton, however, ellipses generally c comes in three's, although an ellipsis at the end of a sentence is followed by a fourth dot, the period.
10. Before 3 a.m. on January 15th, 2003, Dan finished reading all about "Mechanics " in The Concise Wadsworth Handbook[underline].

Can you please check if I've made all the corrections possible for each sentence. Thank you.

2. Herodotus was a cross-eyed,
door-to-door
salesman who sold out- of-date grammar books that emphasized the importance of hyphens.

4. improvement; moreover

Here are a couple of corrections. There may be more that are needed

5. Here is a blessing of which I am fully aware, <~~delete comma, insert a dash (not a hyphen) a lover with wild young hormones and a penchant for colons and commas.
6. Your correction is fine, especially if you capitalize the T on "take."
7. <~~Your correction is fine if you add one more comma. Where will you put it?
8. Put quotation marks around short poems like "Ithaca," <~~Run-on here; how will you fix it? on the other hand<~~insert comma here underline book length<~~hyphenate poems like Dante's The Divine Comedy [underline].
9. Thirty-seven dots across the page may work for Edith Wharton,<~~Run-on here; how will you fix it? however, ellipses generally come <~~Some typos here; should be "come" not "c comes" in three's, although an ellipsis at the end of a sentence is followed by a fourth dot, the period.
10. Before 3 a.m. on January 15th<~~15, not 15th in full date, 2003, Dan finished reading all about "Mechanics "<~~delete extra space before the closing quotation marks in The Concise Wadsworth Handbook[underline].

=)

Come to think of it, in #10 you should probably either delete the words "all about" or not have the quotation marks and capital M on mechanics.
