An equation is a statment with the equal sign = in it. If we have

y=2x+3 and we're asked to find x when y=7 then we would have to solve

7=2x+3

The solution of that equation is x=2.

Was there a specific equation you had in mind?

no i just needed a solution of an equation but now i need a function

Ok, consider f(x)=x^2
