My daughter's homework and I cant figure it out for the life of me.

In America the average person spends about 9.5 billion minutes on the phone a business day. In 1997 the estimated population of Americans the ages of 19-64 is about 163,000,000. About how many minutes does the average person between the ages of 19 and 64 spend on the phone per day?

A friend said to dived 9,500,000,000 by 163,000,000. Is that right? for some reason it looks odd to me

This statement here
"...the average person spends about 9.5 billion minutes on the phone "
doesn't sound right to me. Do you mean that on the average business day Americans spend approximately 9.5 billion minutes in phone conversations?
Supposing that is the case then we want
average number of minutes per person on the phone in a business day.
Your friend's advice is correct, divide total minutes by total people to get the average number of minutes per person
avg. min = 9,500,000,000/163,000,000
You should get a number slightly less than 1hr, which seems about right. I'm sure that number is much higher now.

Yes that's the answer we got 58.28. Something about the entire question was throwing me off. But thanks for the help!!!

It Is 58 minutes, just round it off

During an average lifetime, a person sheds about 40 pounds of dead skin. In the united states, life expectancy for men is about 73.6 years. Life expectancy for women is about 7.92 years.

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help clarify the question for you. It's always important to make sure we understand the problem correctly before attempting to solve it. In this case, dividing the total number of minutes spent on the phone by the total population gives us the average number of minutes per person. As you mentioned, the answer of 58.28 minutes seems reasonable for the average person between the ages of 19 and 64 to spend on the phone per day. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
