The English Patient and A Farewell to Arms consist of many themes, but the theme that dominates in both novels is love. Ondaatje shows readers that if love truly comes from the soul, it can transcend place and time. Almasy still holds Katherine dear to his heart even he knows that he can never be with her or hold her. Kip, who falls in love with Hana, moves to India and gets married to another woman, but he is still unable to stop thinking about Hana and the future they could have had. The love these characters experienced is the kind of love that lasts forever showing that time and place has no connection to love.
Maybe I missed something in an earlier post that someone else answered, but "love" all by itself cannot be a theme. It's an emotion. Themes involving love include "love conquers all" or "love can transcend time" or something similar. You need to alter some of your wording once you figure out the exact theme you are working on.
