Genres are simply different types of writing. The four largest categories are poetry, prose fiction, prose non-fiction, and drama. Within each of those are additional genres. For example, science fiction is within the genre of prose fiction; one-act plays are within the genre of drama; ballads and epic poems are two within the genre of poetry.

If you go to www.onelook.com (an excellent dictionary website, by the way!) and enter "genre," this is the resulting webpage: http://www.onelook.com/?w=genre&ls=a
Among the quick definitions at the right, the first two are what you're looking for. In addition, click on the Oxford or American Heritage links at the left to see further definitions.

I don't know what design texts are, and I don't know how YOUR reading has influenced YOUR writing -- although just about everyone's writing improves if he or she does a lot of reading.

=)

Genres refer to different categories or types of writing, such as poetry, prose fiction, prose non-fiction, and drama. To understand genres more deeply, you can visit www.onelook.com and search for "genre." This website provides various definitions and further explanations of genres.

Regarding how your reading has influenced your writing, it is a personal reflection that you would need to express based on your experiences and observations. You could mention how reading various genres has exposed you to different writing styles, enhanced your vocabulary, or inspired you with new ideas.

As for design texts, I believe you may be referring to articles or texts related to graphic design or visual communication. Unfortunately, I don't have specific information about the current magazine you mentioned, but you could try searching online for design-related articles or resources that align with your writing skills or interests in design.

Remember, reading widely and exploring different genres will not only improve your writing skills but also broaden your knowledge and understanding of different subjects.
