Academic papers NEED to be formal so that your professors will take your ideas seriously. You need to be very organized and deliberate in presenting your ideas, and you need to follow all the "rules" of standard English grammar and usage.
Here are two websites (among many) which can help you write better papers:

For research and writing, in MLA format

For grammar, usage, and organization ideas, no matter what format you are using. Go into the "Word and Sentence Level," the "Paragraph Level," and the "Essay and Research Paper Level" for help in specific areas. Use the "Ask Grammar..." and "Peripherals..." if there are for further help.
Be sure to add these two to your Favorites so you can return to them easily whenever you need them.
