The Erie Canal connected New York City up the Hudson River and through the canal to the Great Lakes. It is much, much cheaper to ship grain and stuff by boat than by road. So that opened up the mid west and made NY a big city.

Why was it built? Answer..... Shortcuts, Land transportation the entire way. Ship through the Mediterranean and off load the ship, move the goods by land to the Red Sea or Arabian Gulf and reload on a ship.
